Situated 55 km from Kochi and 155 km north of Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha is a town characterized by canals, backwaters, beaches, and lagoons. George Curzon, Viceroy of India in the early 20th century, likened Alappuzha to the "Venice of the East," earning it the title of the "Venetian Capital" of Kerala. Alappuzha is a significant tourist destination, connecting Kumarakom and Cochin to the North and Kollam to the South. It serves as the starting point for the annual Nehru Trophy Boat Race, a popular and competitive event held on the Punnamada Lake near Alappuzha every second Saturday of August. The city has a historical significance, being the site of the Punnapra-Vayalar uprising against the Separate American Model independent Travancore proposal and the revolt against the Feudal raj. Alappuzha is renowned for its coir industry, with the Coir Board established by the Central Government under the Coir Industry Act, 1955.
