Located on the sandy shores of Bay of Bengal, Velankanni Church is considered one of the holiest Christian pilgrimage destinations in India. Situated on the Coromandel Coast, 350 km south of Chennai and 12 km south of Nagapattinam, it is believed that Virgin Mary appeared here with Baby Jesus in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Since then, Velankanni has become a revered site for the Christian community, declared a holy city by the Pope, attracting devotees from around the globe.
Officially spelled as Vailankanni, this small hamlet is famous for its Roman Catholic shrine, Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health, also known as the Velankanni Church. Referred to as the ‘Lourdes of the East’, the shrine symbolizes a blend of various cultures, promoting international and religious harmony. The church is dedicated entirely to Virgin Mary and the Heavenly Mother. Devotees believe that Lady of Health or Madonna of Velankanni possesses miraculous powers, drawing people of all religions, castes, and creeds to pay their respects to the revered lady.
